Overview

Whatever happened to the contemporary guitar hero? Sure, there are metal shredders like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, and cutting edge noise-merchants like Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine and Munky and Head from Korn. But when it comes to modern rock guitar, virtuosity seems about as desirable as the measles. That's why Built to Spill guitarist Doug Martsch is such an anomaly. Influenced largely by Neil Young and Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis (alt rock's other guitar guru), Martsch is able to play sprawling, emotive leads and dynamic rhythms without losing a drop of indie cred -- largely because, no matter how adept he is on his instrument, his aesthetic, songwriting and lifestyle come straight from the Sonic Youth Guide to Bohemian Living. LIVE pulls together stunning concert performances of a pair of songs from Built to Spill's last and most cohesive album, KEEP IT LIKE A SECRET ("The Plan" and the 19-minute-long "Broken Chairs"); three from the slightly less focused PERFECT FROM NOW ON ("Randy Describes Eternity," "Stop the Show," and "I Would Hurt a Fly"); and one from the early, promising disc THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH LOVE ("Car"). There's also a cover apiece of songs by Love as Laughter and the Halo Benders (Martsch's sideline project with Calvin Johnson), but the real highlight here is a breathtaking 20-minute cover of Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer," which demonstrates just how well Martsch makes his instrument sway, sulk, and weep. Killer.
