Freedom! Excitement! Adventure! That's what's missing in Marianne's life. Apparently, it's all available in Los Angeles. When the Bright Lights beckon, she packs her meager belongings and leaves her small town and domineering mother behind. But she finds that freedom is lonely, excitement can be scary, and adventures aren't always pleasant. Sometimes she thinks of giving up and going home to her mother. On second thought, can anything be that bad?
So, she perseveres. Awful landlord? Become roommates with a handsome law student. Disagreeable boss? He's nothing compared to Mom. And she gets a raise, so she's rewarded for putting up with him. Lonely? Not anymore. She has new friends and she's fallen in love--well, in a serious case of like--with that handsome law student. Life finally seems to be going her way--until she and her law student are evicted. Marianne has moved twice in two years and she's tired of packing. Where should she go now? The handsome law student comes up with a solution. They should get married so they can buy property together. Marianne considers his proposal. Sure, it's a solution to her immediate problem. But would her search for freedom, excitement, and adventure be squelched? Would she be replacing her mother with a husband?
