Motivational speaker Bernstein (May Cause Miracles) covers well-trodden ground in her spirited, guide to attracting what one wants. Taking cues from the 1976 self-help bestseller A Course in Miracles—namely that each thought is important and “emits energy”—Bernstein directs readers on how to choose their thoughts and feelings in order to attract what they desire. The author identifies seven blocks to one’s attracting power—among them “believing in lack” and “fearing rejection”—and explains how to overcome each: notice the feeling, forgive the feeling, and choose to feel differently. Bernstein also references the Abraham-Hicks Emotional Guidance Scale to help readers identify emotions and then move up the scale toward more positive emotional states; other suggested practices are prayer (or meditation) and journaling. For the book’s second half, Bernstein explores her attracting methods from a Christian perspective and explains how to make connections with arch angels, guardian angels, and spirit guides, which can include deceased family members and former teachers. Bernstein, seemingly as an afterthought, also encourages readers to make sure their desire to connect with spirits is “backed with service” and to remain in a state of appreciation. Her optimistic book will appeal to anyone who already believes “that good things can come easily.” (Sept.)
